Headrush Dynamics & EQ
Bass EQ
Inspired by Avid® Custom EQ (Eleven Rack)
Simple but very musical dedicated low frequency equalizer (similar to an analog bass EQ or low-band shaper)
GENERAL FUNCTION
- Control and shape the low range (low end)
Used for:
- add body
- remove “mud”
- define the punch
Ideal for:
- electric bass
- acoustic guitar
- voice (boom correction)
Control Parameters
LeveldB
- Typical range: approximately −12 → +12 dB
- Function: boost or cut of low frequencies
Behavior:
- negative → reduces boom/rumble
- positive → increases body / depth
Practical effect:
- −3 / −6 dB → cleanliness
- +2 / +4 dB → greater low-end presence
- +6 dB → very noticeable (pay attention to the mix)
FrequencyHz
- Typical range: ~40 – 300 Hz
- Function: selects the frequency on which the boost/cut acts
Typical areas:
- 40–80 Hz: sub / depth
- 80–120 Hz: punch
- 120–200 Hz: body
- 200–300 Hz: heat / mud
Choosing this frequency well is crucial
QShallow / Deep
- determines how wide or narrow the curve is
Shallow
- broad curve
- natural effect
ideal for:
- general shaping
- musical use
Deep
- narrow curve
- more precise intervention
ideal for:
- eliminate problematic frequencies
- fix specific “boom”.
Pro Tips
- Too much boost → mixed mix
- Too much cut → thin sound
- Q Deep + boost → artificial sound
Better to use:
- Shallow for musical sound
- Deep for correction
Ideal workflow:
- USA Shallow for modeling
- USA Deep to correct specific problems
Quick Reference
- Level (dB): low boost/cut
- Frequency (Hz): target frequency
- Q (Shallow/Deep): bandwidth
Setup Examples
Clean acoustic guitar
Frequency120Hz
Level−2 / −4 dB
QShallow
Less rumble
Voice (anti-boom)
Frequency100–150 Hz
Level−3 / −6 dB
QDeep
Delete “mud”
Electric bass (punch)
Frequency80–100 Hz
Level+2 / +4 dB
QShallow
More presence
Live anti-feedback
Frequency120–200 Hz
Level−4 / −8 dB
QDeep
Reduces problematic resonances
